I highly recommend you use ICEwm (with the "fake95" theme) as the
operating environment if you want a familiar usage paradigm. There are
other better light window managers if this is not a pressing concern.

Attempting to use either GNOME or KDE environments is going to test your
patience, sorely, on this spec machine - avoid them. his will also save
you disk space :)

For applications, I think you'll find that Gnumeric, Abiword and Galeon
are far more suited to this spec machine than Open Office and Mozilla.
