Hey all,

I know that there's some other people on this list running Mandrake on a
Compaq Evo laptop. I have wonderful news! They do do acpi, but there's a
trick.

Download and install this kernel:

http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/mandrake/devel/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/kernel-2.4.19.17mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm

then, in the lilo section for your new, shiny kernel put:

        append="devfs=mount pci=noacpi"

(that's the trick)

then run lilo, and when you reboot, IT WON'T HANG! (well, at least it is
no more likely to hang than usual). When you reboot you'll have these
modules:

ac
battery
button
fan
processor
thermal
toshiba_acpi

which you can load, and when you do you'll get entries in /proc/acpi -
and they'll have numbers in them!!! And they won't be zero!!! And you'll
still have all the zany Mandrake kernel patches!!!

The GNOME battery monitor whatsit isn't working for me at the moment (I
assume it's linking against a library not built against this kernel or
something), but I wrote a simple little perl script that is giving me
battery information which I am willing to believe is somewhat accurate.

so yeah, it can be done. I'll put those details up on a website some
time soon.

James.
