the error is clear on what is wrong however i'm not sure what file i
have to edit to fix this problem.

Indeed. The file you need to fix is /var/lib/dpkg/available.

um while we are at it i am getting a mmap problem when
doing a apt-get upgrade. My internal programming circuit tells me this is a memory mapped file error (so probably internal to the apt-get program) ie. the /var/lib/dpkg/available file is too big

what to do about that one?
