These days LiteOn seem to make cheap-ish but decent equipment that plays
well with Linux, probably because they use generic components. Sometimes
cheaper *is* better... just recently there was an article on
linuxhardware.org comparing several CD burners: Plextor IDE, Plextor
SCSI and a LiteOn. LiteOn was the cheapest and the fastest, gave them no
trouble whatsoever and was the overall winner of that contest. Their DVD
player should be OK too.
