If you think of a server as something that provides a service,
then it makes a little more sense:
file servers provides files,
database servers provides data,
the X server provides a display
The only difference is the physical location relative to
the user.

As a developer or user? Users don't have to anything
but maybe set DISPLAY or run xauth.
Developers don't even need to do that!
