trying to get ALSA (www.alsa-project.org) working under debian testing. even
followed the instructions in this great how-to
(http://www.linuxorbit.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Sections&file=index&req=viewarticle&artid=541&page=1
watch the wrap) to compile new modules.

i think my problem in the end of the day is i'm running a kernel (2.4.19-k7)
compiled with K7 optimisations (AMD Duron) rather then the stock kernel
(2.4.19) hence this problem:

# modprobe snd-emu10k1

/lib/modules/2.4.19/alsa/snd.o: insmod snd-emu10k1 failed

my guess is that i just need to ensure a kernel modules package builds
against the right kernel. am i on the right track?

anyone got any pointers or suggestions?
