The dir command does this, the dropping back to a shell while still in the
ftp session (!) doesn't work with the <<MARK/MARK features at the
beginning and end of the script.

dir from the ftp man page:

     dir [remote-directory] [local-file]
Print a listing of the directory contents in the
directory,
remote-directory, and, optionally, placing the output in
local-file. If interactive prompting is on, ftp will
prompt
the user to verify that the last argument is indeed the
tar
get local file for receiving dir output. If no directory
is
specified, the current working directory on the remote
machine is used. If no local file is specified, or
local-file is -, output comes to the terminal.

I guess I will have to quit the current ftp, then check and start another
one..... even though there are issues with that. (This script is supposed
to take 5 - 10 seconds to complete the execute, it takes 2-3 minutes!!)
