OK.  Which kernel are you running?  I've had no problem with the
latest Debian cardutils and the D-Link DWL650 PCMCIA cards using the
standard hermes driver in 2.4.19 and 2.5 46.  I'm using a pci->pcmcia
adapter on my workstation, and ad-hoc mode (I have only four machines
on the wireless network, so an access point looked like expensive overkill)

But the laptops work fine at work where they're using netware
access points, and in the Uni library (don't know what access points
are being used there)

Shouldn't need to set the channel -- the access point in managed mode
will set that for you.

It looks to me like a mismatch between the prism2 module and
the kernel (but could be something else entirely)

The DWL650 here uses the orinoco driver that comes in the kernel.  Try
that!
