A lot of the pains with TV cards is that whilst getting the main chip ( the Bt8x8 ) 
detected is easy, the hard bit is the tuner and sound chips, these are truly devices 
which can cause heart-ache.  

Once I had a card which was supposed to work 'out of the box' [ muffled laughter ], 
anyhow, after getting a black/white picture + sound, or colour and no sound... I went 
mad...for a couple of days.  Turns out, one small parameter, PLL=1/0 was the key to it 
all, but no where did anyone mention that.

I strongly suggest looking at the documents in:

        /usr/src/linux/Documents/video/bttv

especially the CARDLIST file.
