In redhat 8, the installation goes from - probing the system - choosing type of installation (and the packages) - transferring install image to hard drive - setting up RPM transaction - installing the packages - configuring X

This give you a console login after installation. X configuration is probably the bigest problem when installing linux and its a case of the older your video card the easier it will be.
