What address are you trying to ping?  localhost, or the ppp address, or
another interface?

What output do you get from ifconfig, and 'route -n'?

My home gateway occasionally loses its loopback interface, for reasons
I'm yet to fathom.  It then starts to act a little like you're
describing.  But I'm not sure yet.
