Basically, due to an attempt to 'optimise' the writes, they landed afoul in a situation where the meta/journal data would not be written out to disk explicitly if you had altered the disk contents and then proceeded to unmount / poweroff within 30 seconds of that. . . .sort of kills the whole safety aspect of journalling. As they say, first rule of optimisation ... "Don't do it".
