Thanks for that. I had tried ps & top, but this did not seem to point to the culprit process. I was hoping for a tool that would show explicitly what processes were hitting on the disk - there are such things for Solaris & NT.
The disk itself is fine (I think!) - there is no tapping when I use RH7.3 or even W98 (the games OS). Also, each "tap" sounds like a bit of head movement, and the disk light flashes - hence my guess that a process is up to no good somewhere.
