A couple of things to check:
- Your Windows login is mkraus? If not, check that you have
mkraus your_windows_login_name
in the user map file in samba lib directory.
- On Linux, the home directory for the unauthenticated SMB user (guest
account) exists. If not, it will probably end up in /var/spool/samba.
This account should not have a valid shell.
- The guest access is set up correctly in the smb.conf file. The default is
reasonable but you might want to change the name from 'guest' to something
else.
- The Windows primary domain controller is responding to requests. That is,
unless you have set SAMBA as the primary domain contoller. Check that the PC
with the access problem is set up correctly to join the domain. Otherwise it
ends up as a guest access. If SAMBA is the PDC you need to read the
instructions carefully - I haven't tried it.
- If SAMBA is not the PDC then drop the "announce as" OS type in smb.conf to
a lower value to prevent it from wasting time participating in CIFS
elections.
Cheers,
Jill.

Subject: [SLUG] SAMBA - not assigning my home directory properly.
...
Samba is connecting my home drive to /var/spool/samba
rather than /home/mkraus ... Argh!
All other users seem fine at this stage, which is OK.
However I'm scared that its going to start going funny for
other users.
