Good luck though! I've had similar problems with rsync over many different machines, over rsh, ssh, solaris, hpux, linux, with no apparent cause or resolution except by waving around a rubber chicken. Search through the rsync mailing list archives and you'll see many references to it, with the occasional fix with the comment 'yeah we've got it THIS time' I think it must be something fundamental to the rsync protocol which is broken.
