as a newbie myself ... i quote the following from the "Windows LAN server HOW-TO" section of "/usr/share/doc/HOWTO/HTML/en/index.html"
also ... i noticed that on 20021211 mircosoft has announced that there is a security problem with SMB ... i have forgotten the article no. but this should be easy to retrieve.. using swat and the accompanying readings .. i was able to setp samba in less than 3 days on my LAN ... i m a very slow reader and an even slower thinker :) being on self-administered "medication" did not help either :) ====begin quote 4.2 Samba Version 2.0.3 was installed as part of the RedHat installation and because this was a trial run I saw no reason to download the latest (at time writing this is 2.0.7). smbclient was not installed as there would be no reason for the Linux box to access shares on the Windows PC's. Configuration was a breeze thanks to the SWAT utility which is accessed by pointing a web browser at port 901 (ie: http://localhost:901). I was even able to access and configure this from one of the Windows boxes across the network (http://<ip address>:901). ====end quote -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://lists.slug.org.au/listinfo/slug
