One thing to consider - are the tapes themselves DDS# (i.e. 125 metres) ? The DDS2 tapes (which are 120 metres) are only 4 and a bit gigabytes.... Doubtful that this is the reason, but....
Also I recall there were a spate of tapes from one manufacturer (can't remember who) which were mislabelled at one stage.
