Ok, so I got a little carried away - directories did not get renamed, just added as Mike suggested. There was a HUGE amount of directories - in the 1000's of thousands (no exageration). Anyway, deleting them got rid of the "problem".
Definitely turned auto-update off on Win2k box also. Thanks again Mike.
