but I'm trying to use fdisk, (so I can repartition it) and according to
my understanding, and also according to man page for fdisk, the format
is "fdisk device", not "fdisk partition"? Confused now...

Yep, and that would be what I wanted...

I tried both and the answer is still the same. "unable to open"
