I have both Mandrake 9.0 and Knoppix 3.1 installed on my Athlon based PC.

My CD-RW and DVD-R are connected to the first Raid IDE port on the mobo (master (hde) and slave (hdf) respectively - also seen by Knoppix as sr0 and sr1). I cannot connect these drives to the "normal" IDE connectors as I have 4 Seagate Barracuda ATA IV hdds and they become corrupted on the raid IDEs (Seagate claim that the drives are too fast for Raid I believe).

I have symlinked /dev/dvd to hdf on Mandrake and can access data Dvds without problems. On Knoppix I have symlinked /dvd and /dev/dvd to /dev/sr1 and can access data Dvds and run Movie Dvds with Gtk+ Videolan providing I change its Disk location settings from /dev/dvd to /dev/sr1 .

The symlinks seem to make no difference to Xine, MPlayer, Gtk+Videolan. Xine won't access the DVD-R or run DVDs under either distro, and under Mandrake MPlayer will provide a still image when trying to play movies. I have tried changing the settings in these programs to point to /dev/hdf (Mandrake) and /dev/sr1 (Knoppix) but the changes don't work nor do these programs allow the changes to be saved.

There are obviously no hardware problems as Knoppix plays DVD movies, as does WinXP on the same system.

Any advice re Symlinks or what config files to change for Xine, Videolan, Mplayer etc will be gratefully recieved.

For anybody wanting to try Debian Woody I recommend Knoppix bootable CD, and it is simple to install to hard disk.
