Sorry, getting a tad off topic..
Actually it was a great feature of the VMS OS. Probably how it made its
way into non-VMS DEC editors.

I guess this can be done with a script wrapper around vi, but does
anyone know of an option to automagically store the current version of a
text file prior to saving changes. This used to be a feature on DEC
editors and I miss it.
eg
vi /etc/freeswan/ipsec.conf
<make changes>
:wq
ls /etc/freeswan
ipsec.conf.1
ipsec.conf
ipsec.secrets
ie .1 is the backup or some such.
