Have used Dell servers and HP clients quite a bit. Debian is generally a
cinch on server hardware, but sometimes a pain on client hardware as the
stable distro may be a bit behind the times on hardware support (you can get
some interesting variations in name-brand hardware, as they tend to have
components made in bulk specifically for them).

No need for custom kernel builds (unless you're after very specific patches
or minimal kernels) Debian standard kernels support software RAID and many
hardware RAID adapters.
