Hi All,

I have a problem. I have a Debian Woody mail server (POP3 - qpopper and SMTP - exim
3.?) which is hosting all the e-mail for 3 domains. Now the problem is I have remote
users who would like to send e-mail as one of the hosted domains, i.e., not on the
local subnets. Enter SMTP AUTH.

To get things working I have put in a LOGIN and PLAIN authentication method with a
fixed username/password. I'll switch to using the system usernames/passwords later on
a per-user basis. I've tested authentication as per the Exim documentation:
'\0username\0password' to base64, then tested using both "exim -bh 1.2.3.4" and
"telnet 127.0.0.1 25" - each time authentication succeeds and relay is possible :-)

Enter Outlook & Outlook Express (boo hiss - crowd throws beer cans and sticks onto the
field). It just sits there endlessly asking for a username/password. I have the
correct(??) "Username:: : Password::" as the string that is sent but no joy.

What have I missed?

Regards,

James
