I had the same problem (see below) last night. I think this may be the issue:
The workstation was in a workgroup with the same name as the domain. I changed the workstation workgroup to a random one, then reboot. Now join worked fine. After doing all the stuff in http://hr.uoregon.edu/davidrl/samba/samba-pdc.html#joining of course...
