Hi,

Can anyone suggest a good video capture / compression card and
software that works well with Linux? I want it to be relatively
console driven, in that I don't want to put a keyboard on the
machine that's doing the video in/out, but I do have ethernet
running over there.

I've got a spare machine that I've plugged in over where my
hi-fi kit goes, it's loaded up with MP3s and plays those fine
but I'd like to record movies off cable and store them on
VCD rather than the VHS tapes I'm using at the moment.

I've played with an old Buz board/box my brother gave me but
with limited success -- the driver doesn't seem to want to
detect the card and nobody on the mailing list for that is
much help. Also it does MJPEG compression / playback whereas
what I really want is VCD / SVCD i.e. MPEG-1 / 2.

Also, I would prefer it if the card did capture from composite
video + separate audio input rather than being a TV tuner only
type card -- since the signal is coming off cable rather than
an antenna (and it's going through my video amp which is
cabled for separate video / audio outputs).

There was a review of video capture cards in the last APC but
no indications as to which ones would work with Linux.
