Thanks to all that replied to my earlier query. The machine in question is in the Law Faculty and they don't seem to be too familiar with ssh problems. Can't think why :-)
Here is an expanded -v -v output. Can anyone help me sort the problem? There seems to be particular problem with "key_type_from_name".
