You should be able to use the "nv" driver instead of the vesa one.
But you definitely should use the nVidia binary drivers. It makes a HUGE difference. apt-get install nvidia-kernel-src nvidia-glx-src kernel-package then download the linux kernel of your choice, and run make-kpkg to build a debian package for the kernel.
