what i'm trying to work out at the moment is why i needed to build a custom kernel anyway, it was suggested that i ought to by the guy who initially got me on to all this, but i can't remember why, exactly.

think i'll start just by upgrading it to the standard 2.4, see how that goes. this box is a non-X web/mail server, i don't think it needs anything special at the kernel level. my friend might have been being a little over-enthusiastically-geeky. :-)
