Mick, I know it's a bit late in this thread, but when I intalled woody a couple of months ago on a machine with an onboard Ensoniq ES1371, I got the same error message. Being short of time (and lazy!) I cheated as follows: # apt-get install sndconfig # sndconfig My sound problem solved. If you've ever installed RH 5.x or 6.x, you'll recognize sndconfig, and you'll know it works if you can hear a still-Swedish-accented Linus telling you how to pronounce "Linux".
