Mick, I know it's a bit late in this thread, but when I intalled woody a
couple of months ago on a machine with an onboard Ensoniq ES1371, I got
the same error message. Being short of time (and lazy!) I cheated as
follows:
# apt-get install sndconfig
# sndconfig

My sound problem solved.

If you've ever installed RH 5.x or 6.x, you'll recognize sndconfig, and
you'll know it works if you can hear a still-Swedish-accented Linus
telling you how to pronounce "Linux".

Cheers, David.
