Close enough to indistinguishably faster for general desktop use (and most 'edge server' uses) that it doesn't matter. Seriously, for clicky-clicky desktop applications or spitting out webpages, an optimised kernel makes very little difference. You'll get a far bigger performance kick out of user level configuration changes, more memory, faster disks, fatter bus, etc. In special cases, every optimisation counts, and in the few CPU-bound cases, CPU optimisations may be a very useful part of that. But in the general case... Not worth it. ;-) - Jeff -- linux.conf.au 2004: Adelaide, Australia http://lca2004.linux.org.au/ "Everyone's a little queer, why can't she be a little straight?" - Weezer, Pink Triangle -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://lists.slug.org.au/listinfo/slug
