I have to do this with Linux in an Office running Linux and Ive found 2 very reliable ways of making PDF's "easily" from .doc's
1. Get OpenOffice 1.1 when the stable branch comes out and use the PDF converter tool(been using 1.1 beta2 and its working fine for me)
2. Get a copy of Codeweavers Crossover for Office and just install Office 97/2000/XP and then open the .doc in question. Then print as normal but select the "print to file" option. I usually get staff to dump the file on the desktop then click on the postscript file on the desktop and in our case Kghostview opens and then we print it again but this time (Kprint menu is now open) I select Print to Acrobat PDF and kghostview turns the Postscript file into a PDF.
The first method from an Open Source aspect is more politically correct and is in reality easier but OpenOffice still isn't 100% on doc translation (more like 85%).
The second method is a bit more complicated but not much, but the results are 100% but this costs $$$ unless you don't mind playing with the source.
