OOo 1.0.x is quite sensitive to 'broken' fonts.  Maybe you had a problem
font (e.g. unreadable, zero size, broken file structure) in one of the paths
that the wrapper adds to the fontpath?

Thankfully, 1.1 seems to be more robust with problem fonts.
