The kernel-package package. It enables you to build .deb files contained
your custom kernel, which you can then install with dpkg. This is good
for a number of reasons, but it will update LILO for you, update the
symlinks, update /lib/modules etc etc.

After you install it, have a look at the README files in
/usr/share/doc/kernel-package/ which explain the procedure. Essentially
the "make dep" and "make bzImage" steps of building a 2.4 kernel are
replaced with 'make-kpkg --revision=[revision] kernel_image" but as
always look at the docs.

Doing this also means it is easier to use the nvidia-kernel-src and
nvidia-glx-src packages to install drivers for NVidia graphics cards,
for people who are using them with Debian.
