One thing you might do if you edit /etc/passwd
directly is run pwck (password check) afterwords.
It will tell you about problems in the /etc/passwd
file. You can expect a few messages about home directories
not being found for some system accounts.
There's also a grpck for /etc/group.

The Wink2k box says it might have a DNS prob when I try

Not that experience with win2k, but I'd advise you
to use the "net ... " commands from the command line,
rather than use explorer. You get far better diagnostics,
which you can then google for or consule support.microsoft.com.

Naming can be a problem. You have to make sure each
box knows it's own name and the name of the other box
and that they all agree with each other and across protocols.
(dns, wins, netbios or whatever) to minimise your problems.

Matt
