Thanks Ben,
Turns out the modem was busted - looks like it works fine for faxing but
can't sustain a data connection.
Might have needed an init string, but a new modem was easier.
seems ok now - these days I always seem to fix the problem either while I am
composing a message to SLUG or quickly after sending it. :-(
