Are you able to mount the 2.5.69 kernel fs or at the
very least fsck ?

If you are able to mount of course you are able to
fsck.

Now, once mounted have a look at the /boot/config???
of your 2.5.69 kernel and compare with /boot/config???
of the one that is working.
