You need to read up on windows 'roaming profiles' - that'll do all you need and runs well off samba. I've used roaming profiles with win98 and samba2.2 successfully... samba 3 and winXP are a whole different kettle of sometimes very smelly fish but it's all quite workable, i'm told. :-)
