Hmm. I'm not sure I have the full answer to that. The version of GIMP that ships with Mandrake 9.1 uses gtk 1.x which pre-dates the magic of fontconfig and friends. Gimp 1.3 is in cooker atm, which uses gtk 2 with fontconfig, so it should be able to use all the fonts you have available in KDE apps and so forth. That's one possibility, but I must stress that both cooker and gimp 1.3 are experimental and break stuff pretty regularly. Also, cooker has just moved to gcc 3.3, so you may end up upgrading more than you want. All that said, Gimp 1.3 has a much cleaner interface and has general improved niftiness, so maybe it's worth a look. Other than that I'd guess that your missing fonts are probably truetype fonts which are missing some aspect of "installation". Mandrake Control Center has a font installer thing that is very good at this. I'd recommend using that to try sucking fonts from Windows or whereever they come from. It might help to run gimp from an xterm and watch to see if any error messages appear on the xterm when you observe this behaviour. HTH, though I'm stabbing in the dark, so I expect it won't.
