I guess the thing I'm really after is something that is equivalent of the
shareware app (for MS Win) Acdsee.
All the suggestions so far have been great - but haven't been able to beat
the functionality I see in acdsee. I'll keep hunting... :)

gqview is standard with Redhat and Mandrake distros, has some graphic file
management utilties and is a GUI app if that is useful.
