See if you can find yourself a recovery disk; Tom's root/boot disk and/or the Linux Bootable Business card are fairly good. Boot off the recovery media, mount the affected partition (read/write), edit /etc/shadow and delete the root password. Reboot and begin recoverying. Or restore from backups.
