ahem, too late, I already complied and started it , yes, from 'standalone'
NOT xinetd

I removed the wu-ftpd stuff form xinetd, and, reloaded xinetd

I also copied the supplied script to /etc/init.d;

that gets picked up by 'service' script OK

# service proftpd
Usage: /etc/init.d/proftpd {start|stop|restart|status|reread|resume|suspend}
suspend accepts additional arguments which are passed to ftpshut(8)

so far, so good

so, now I just need to sym-link it to run level 3, I think...

(maybe I'll download the rpm just to see what it does...)
