Present: Mary Gardiner (minutes), Tony Green, Peter Hardy, Jaime
Hemmett, Jan Schmidt, Pia Smith (guest from Linux Australia), Jeff Waugh
(chair)
Apologies: Jamie Wilkinson
1. Last month's business
1.1 Ongoing tasks
1.1.1 FAQs
- various committee members have done some work on the FAQs
1.1.2 Backup talks
- committee members will continue developing backup talks and will
put a list in CVS
1.1.3 Speaker's guide
- no further work
- we need to investigate an automatic conversion to HTML so that it
and the FAQs don't need to be in two separate repositories, Tony is
looking into this for work
1.1.4 Storage
- Jaime will investigate this this month, she will look at
professional storage near UTS
1.1.5 Documentation of video process
- there is a kind of a video process, but Jan has not documented it
1.1.6 Video encoding and storage
- currently stalled on the release form
1.1.7 Video sales
- Jeff will inquire about what vendors think about selling SLUG video
1.1.8 Security audit of maddog, making sure everyone's access is uptodate
- There hasn't been progress on the security audit
- maddog's second disk is dead
1.2 Overdue tasks
1.2.1 Video release form
- Mary has posted a draft version, will finalise
1.2.2 Logo competition announcement
- Jaime will finish the arrangements for the logo competition and
announce it
2. Upcoming events
2.1 Trivia night
- WBH wants firm numbers from SLUG in order to settle on a price for
using the room, but SLUG won't get confirmation
from attendees very far in advance
- SLUG will promise WBH ~40 attendees, and absorb the cost if the
number is not met -- we will pick a date and run with it
2.2 Workshop
- to be pushed back behind fundraising events
2.3 Fests and social events
- the committee will not continue to organise these ourselves, but
find keen members to organise (between them) around four social
events plus installfests and codefests
- these events will not be workshop-sized, but rather activities for
SLUG regulars and/or mailing list subscribers
3. Review of June meeting
- SLUGlets was disorganised due to Tony's unavoidable last minute
absence
- the forum was good, and Gus's talk was good
4. July meeting
- SLUGlets: possibly Anand+Robert?
- General talk: Jon Teh on iptables
- Techie talk: Gavin on Postgres
5. SLUG and Linux Australia
- Linux Australia should be the umbrella media contact for the
Australian Linux using community (the LUGs). The new
[EMAIL PROTECTED] list will facilitate LA contacting the
community before making comments
- SLUG will retain our own media contacts for both regional events,
and any case where SLUG specifically wants to comment
- since SLUG is already an incorporated association, we don't need to
share LA's insurance etc, and therefore any affiliation will be
informal (non-legally binding)
- LA and SLUG will not share membership (although LA members can join
SLUG and SLUG members join LA, neither will grant automatic
membership like this)
- in return, we would like Linux Australia to provide regular status
reports, and to provide a charter and mission statements
6. Evan Leibovitch's visit to Australia
- Evan Leibovitch, the president of the Linux Professional Institute,
will be in Australia to give a seminar in August
- SLUG might be able to help publicise, or possibly invite Evan to
speak separately to SLUG members?
7. Lindsay Bevege and the ALP
- Pia told us that Lindsay Bevege, a consultant working with the state
government on Open Source Software, had been trying to contact SLUG
8. Brainstorming about SLUG
- we concluded that much more delegation (with committee members roles
being bringing idea back to SLUG) would be a good thing for SLUG
- there was some discussion of involving other interested groups
(computing societies at the universities, for example) in SLUG and
organising joint events
