Matt, I had that problem I noticed gdm would start two instances of itself, possibly causing some conflict. Possibly it's a bug in gdm or the /etc/init.d/gdm file. just clutching at straws. I have not been successful in resolving the problem. :( I though I read some where on a debian site saying one of the X libraries or something like it was broken when running gdm. When I experienced the problem I could not find it again.
