Thanks Jeff and Mary, but it's just never simple, is it? I checked and
double checked... My account is correctly set for SMTP, not Sendmail,
and the server is the same as in Kmail: mail.internode.on.net. 

In fact, at first I simply copied the whole Evolution folder from a
working user on my Libranet box, settings and all. But when that didn't
work, to make sure there aren't any differences between versions, setups
or whatever. I also made another user, and set up Evolution for that
user from scratch. The results were the same.
