Dear Linux gurus
I am relatively new to linux and would greatly
appreciate assistance regarding setting up gnome.
I recently installed redhat linux 8.0 on my
computer but unforunately the X server (XFree86) does not support my video
chip set (Intel 845G). Consequently I can only display with 8 bit colour
and 800x600 resolution. This is unacceptable.
To remedy the problem I went in search of an X
server that would support my video hardware. I found an X server
demo from a company called xi graphics that did the trick. However
they wanted me to shell out $39 bucks for the thing to work for more that 25
minutes at a time. Being a cheap skate I refused to pay the
money.
I then found that the latest version of XFree86 now
supports my hardware. The wrinkle was that I had to update the kernel to
2.4.20 or later to be able to install the latest XFree86 server. With only
moderate discomfort I managed to compile the latest stable kernel
2.4.21. and get it to boot nicely. I then installed the new XFree86
server and all my video problems were solved.
THE PROBLEM IS: my gnome desktop has
disappeared. I seem to have some very basic windowing system (but the
colour and resolution is great). Gnome is installed. I can
start a gnome-terminal , I can start the gnome-panel etc
etc. I do not want to write a script myself to start all this
shit automatically - I simply want to know what set of files contain
the scripts that start all the gnome stuff that you see in a release like redhat
8.0.
PS: I am a bloody minded individual and will
not go and purchase an updated release that may well solve all my
problems. I want to make if work myself.
