I don't thing LTS is that bad to require a reboot. 
I am only assuming that there could have been a stray
app running that could have just needed some killing.
I know systems at best are sucky when running on 98%
cpu utilisation. To stop that from happening again in
future you could kill student's terminals with a cron
that will make them remember to log off for the weekend.
