If you boot off the Red Hat CD using rescue mode, you will also have access to useful utilities and the hard disk. Knoppix is not such a great choice, as its focus is a useable desktop live cd, rather than recovery. There are *heaps* of really cool recovery cds around though; one that I would strongly recommend is LNX-BBC.
