X security relies on cookies in your home directory to allow access to
the terminal so that others signed on cannot access your terminal and
start doing evil things.

You can use sudo which allows you to gain superuser power under
controlled circumstances.  The GDM menu on startup sometimes has a
configure option or finally simply use an editor on the gdm setup files.
