Is there anybody out there who has installed a linux distribution who uses the gnome desktop, and has subsequently tried upgraded the XFree86 server to 4.3.0?
I have had no trouble upgrading the server (I think) - my problem is with the gnome desktop.
If I install all the recommended configuration files then gnome will not start with the new X server (even if I run gdm). I am stuck running wtm - a very old window manager. XFree86 4.3.0 is running.
If I judiously install some of the new config files I do get gnome to start seemingly very nicely. The problem is, there are subtle little problems like - Nautilus doesn't work properly. When I try to open Nautilus it opens up, then shuts down, up, down and so on. There are other subtle problems as well.
Does anyone know how to get gnome to work with XFree86 4.3.0
PS: I have none of these problems with the demo X server from xigraphics - I would however like to get XFree86 to work because it is giving me the pip.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
