Not much help but I've had rsync trying to backup to another machine crash
the target machine with a kernel oops. This seems to be less likely to
happen if I remove the --delete option and/or the --progress option. Can't
see why a user space application should crash the computer in such a way.  
One theory is that the network card/driver can't handle the load, if you
have the option try a quality NIC with a decent buffer & DMA.
